Are you worried about how GDPR will affect your marketing in 2018?

Are you worried about how GDPR will affect your marketing in 2018?

Does your business sell products or services to companies and/or individuals in the UK and/or in Europe?  If so, you will be affected by new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which becomes law on 25th May 2018.  It’s changing to keep up with the way that data is now, as it was last updated in 1998.

After this date, as a company, you will need to have proof that consent was given for every marketing channel that is utilised; email, telephone or text message.  If an organisation is found to break the new rules fines could be up to 4% of turnover, or up to 20 million euros.

Many businesses will be emailing out to their client lists to seek the double opt-in consent (companies like Mailchimp now offer this) where the individual verifies their willingness to receive email communications by responding to two emails; but how many will respond positively?  Your list may decrease substantially….

So, what’s the answer?

One way forward is to maximise your use of LinkedIn.  People join LinkedIn to network and to do business with each other and if you don’t then contact those individuals outside of LinkedIn, then your activities on the platform are not affected by the new regulations.

Why not make growing your LinkedIn network a new year’s resolution in 2018?  If you are a premium member you will not only be able to message your first-degree connections (which is available to everyone on the platform) but your second and third-degree connections, too.   After GDPR that might be a really useful way of spreading the word about your business!

If you’d like some help getting to grips with LinkedIn, maximising your profile, building your company page, learning how to use the search function etc. then you are warmly invited to attend The Social Media Café on Friday 5th January from 9.30 until 11.30am.  Apart from learning more about LinkedIn, you’ll also have an opportunity to network with other local businesses, share ideas and enjoy coffee (or tea!) and plenty of cake.  It’s £17.50 per person and you’ll get a printed handbook to refer back to, after the session.  We meet at Open Space outside Malvern, Worcestershire.  You can book here: https://mediaworks.brushfire.com/events

Take the opportunity of the new GDPR legislation to get LinkedIn working for you and for your business; driving sales forward for you in 2018.  If you’re not using LinkedIn for business, you’re missing out on ways to boost your company’s reach and raise your profile.
