I’ve just come back from a week in Ortigia, and I’ve fallen in love.
Not just with the sea, the food, or the slow rhythm of Sicilian life, but with something far deeper. In the heart of Syracuse, among the ruins and whispers of ancient empires, I stumbled into a sculpture exhibition that stopped me in my tracks, “Mitoraj: The Look – Humanitas and Physis.”
Imagine walking through a Greek amphitheatre, a Roman quarry, and a medieval fortress, all under the same Sicilian sun. In each place, monumental bronze and marble figures rise from the earth, cracked, bandaged, blindfolded, but still defiant. Igor Mitoraj’s sculptures don’t simply sit in these spaces; they speak to them. The ruins and the art seem to recognise each other, old souls in conversation across centuries.
I found it unexpectedly emotional. There was something profoundly human about seeing these fractured figures among the stones of ancient civilisations. Each sculpture seemed to carry a story of struggle and renewal: the fall of Icarus, the endurance of Daedalus, the tenderness of Eros, the courage of Ikaria. They reminded me that beauty often lies in imperfection, that the cracks don’t diminish the power of the work, they complete it.
And as I walked through Ortigia, I realised this isn’t just about art. It’s about leadership, creativity, and business too.
Every business owner I know carries their own set of fractures; the mistakes, the pivots, the sleepless nights. Yet, like Mitoraj’s figures, these aren’t signs of weakness. They’re evidence of life, courage, and persistence. The ruins of the past, whether in business or self-belief, can become the very foundation for your next act.
What struck me most was how seamlessly the modern and the ancient coexisted. The sculptures didn’t fight for attention against the ruins; they belonged there.
That’s what transformation really looks like; when your new ideas don’t erase what came before, they grow from it.
As we edge towards the end of 2025, this feels like the perfect reminder. Big dreams and bold visions can thrive, even among old stones. But they need space, reflection, and courage.
That’s exactly what my Clarity Planning Day is about; giving you room to think, rebuild, and rise again.
